Little Age - 5

5 Years
Social and Emotional:
  • Noticeably wants to please friends
  • Expresses desire to want to be like peers/friends
  • More likely to agree with rules
  • Likes to sing, dance, and play pretend more elaborately
  • Is aware of gender (male and female concepts)
  • Can usually tell what’s real and what’s make-believe
  • Shows more general independence and wants to do things by themselves
  • Is sometimes demanding and sometimes very cooperative

Language and /Communication:
  • Speaks very clearly
  • Tells a simple story using many full sentences
  • Uses and understands future tense
  • Recalls and says full name, address, and phone number

Cognitive - Thinking, learning, and problem-solving
  • Counts 10 or more using objects
  • Can draw a person with at least 6 body parts (head, body, arms, legs, fingers, hair)
  • Can print some letters or numbers
  • Copies a triangle and other geometric shapes with fingers
  • Has a basic understanding of things used every day (money and food)

Movement/Physical Development:
  • Stands on one foot for 10 seconds or longer
  • Hops well and may be able to skip
  • Can do a somersault
  • Uses a fork and spoon (sometimes a table knife if offered)
  • Can use the toilet completely on her own (generally, no assistance with clean-up required)
  • Swings on a swingset and climbs ladders

Hygiene:
  • Potty-trained; very rarely has accidents (mostly bedwetting, if any)
  • Understands bodily washing need and can wash their own body
  • Can wipe themselves clean well enough
  • Can brush their own teeth well

Activities:
  • Simon Says
  • Supervised Tag - You're It!
  • Hide and Go Seek with friends
  • Go Fish! card games
  • Homemade puppet shows
