Social and Emotional:
  • Is shy or nervous with strangers
  • Cries when Mommy or Daddy leaves
  • Has favorite toys and people
  • Shows fear in some situations, such as loud external noises (storms, lawn mower)
  • Hands you a book when they want to hear a story
  • Repeats sounds or actions to get attention
  • Puts out arm or leg to help with dressing
  • Actively plays and participates in games such as peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake
Language and Communication:
  • Responds to simple spoken requests or short directions
  • Uses simple gestures, like shaking their head "no", nodding "yes", or waving "bye-bye"
  • Makes sounds with changes in tone (mimicking other voices or emotional reflection)
  • Says "Mama", "Dada", "Uh-oh!", and other simple verbiage
  • Tries to mimic language, attempting to repeat things the parent says
Cognitive - Thinking, learning, and problem-solving
  • Explores objects in various ways (shaking, banging, throwing)
  • Finds hidden objects easily
  • Looks at the right picture when an object is named
  • Mimics facial and body gestures of parents
  • Interested in using common objects, like drinking from a cup or brushing their teeth
  • Purposely bangs two toys together for amusement
  • Will put things in and take things out of a container
  • Can let go of objects without help to release their grip
  • Pokes objects with their index finger
  • Can follow simple directions
Movement and Physical Development:
  • Gets to a sitting position without help
  • Pulls themselves up to stand and can walk while holding onto furniture
  • May take a few steps without holding onto furniture
  • May stand alone
  • Breastmilk, formula, fruit juices, infant rice or oat cereal, pureed fruits, pureed vegetables, plain Greek yogurt, pureed meats; items that can be easily chewed and broken apart or dissolved in the mouth
  • Sippy cup should be used; bottle should not be used any longer (breastfeeding is still encouraged)
  • Probably not potty-trained (not mobile enough)
  • Splashes bath water but does not understand washing concept
  • Can not wipe themselves clean
  • May lightly mimic brushing teeth but does not understand the concept and requires help
Entertaining Activities:
  • Make-shift drums for them to bang on
  • Large cardbord box exploration
  • Digging in the sand at the beach
