Social and Emotional:
  • Obviously copies mannerisms, behaviors, and verbiage of parents and peers
  • Shows affection for friends without prompting or encouragement
  • Understands how to takes turns in games
  • Shows empathy and concern for crying friend
  • Understands the idea of “mine” and “his” or “hers”
  • Shows a wide range of emotions
  • Separates easily from Mommy and Daddy
  • May become upset with major changes in routine
  • Dresses and undresses self without much or any assistance

Language and Communication:
  • Follows instructions with 2 or 3 steps
    Can clearly name most familiar things
    Understands words like “in,” “on,” and “under”
    Says first name, age, and physical gender
    Can name a friend
    Says words like “I,” “me,” “we,” and “you” and some simple plurals (cars, dogs, cats)
    Talks well enough for strangers to understand most of the time
    Carries on a conversation using 2 to 3 short sentences
Cognitive - Thinking, learning, and problem-solving:
  • Can work toys with buttons, zippers, levers, and moving parts
  • Plays make-believe with dolls, animals, and people
  • Completes simple puzzles with 3 or 4 pieces
  • Understands what “two” means
  • Copies a circle with pencil or crayon
  • Can easily turn book pages one at a time
  • Builds towers of more than 6 blocks
  • Screws and unscrews jar lids, turns door handles, can turn knobs
Movement/Physical Development:
  • Climbs well
  • Runs easily without tripping
  • Pedals a tricycle well enough to move forward a substantial amount
  • Walks up and down stairs, one foot on each step
  • Potty-trained; rarely has accidents
  • Splashes bath water and plays with toys in the bath but does not understand washing concept
  • Can not wipe themselves clean well enough most of the time
  • Can brush their own teeth well but still requires overall help
  • Playing eye-spy with a favorite book
  • Painting with small paint brushes (perhaps watercolors)
  • Shaping Play-doh
  • Sticking stickers on various objects
  • Splashing outside in a kiddie pool
