Age 4
Social and Emotional:
  • Enjoys doing new things, visiting relatives or friends, and regular outings to places like shopping centers
  • Plays as “Mommy” and “Daddy” to peers, dolls, or toys
  • Is noticeably more creative and complex with make-believe play
  • Would rather play with other children than by themselves
  • Cooperates and shares well with other children without direction to do so
  • Often is unable to tell what’s real and what’s make-believe
  • Talks about what they like and what they are interested in
Language/Communication:
  • Knows some basic rules of grammar, such as correctly using gender pronouns
  • Sings a simple song or nursery rhyme from memory
  • Tells simple stories on their own
  • Can say first and last name
Cognitive - Thinking, learning, and problem-solving:
  • Names some colors and some numbers
  • Understands the idea of counting
  • Starts to understand time
  • Remembers parts of a story
  • Understands the idea of “same” and “different”
  • Draws a simple person with 2 to 4 body parts (head, body, arms or legs)
  • Uses scissors
  • Starts to copy some capital letters
  • Plays board or card games
  • Can tell you what they thinks is going to happen next in a story
Movement/Physical Development:
  • Hops and stands on one foot up to 2 seconds
  • Catches a bounced ball most of the time
  • Pours, cuts with supervision, and mashes own food
Hygiene:
  • Potty-trained; rarely has accidents (mostly bedwetting, if any)
  • Understands bodily washing needs but may need assistance
  • Can wipe themselves clean well enough most of the time
  • Can brush their own teeth well enough but may completely miss a few teeth
Activities:
  • Act out a favorite book
  • Have a basic tea-party
  • Finding objects hidden in Play-Doh
  • Counting objects as a game
