Is there any way you could make a digital version of these that is transparent? It's hard to color it in digitally with a white background because you can't color inbetween the white and the line art.

Assuming you're using a program that works with layers, you can create 1 bottom layer in white, middle layer for colouring, top layer- the line work. In the layer settings change the top layer to "Darken" or "Multiply".
Otherwise Google how to replace colours with transparency on your program.
